Solar Activity

Solar activity was moderate this week, with 12 active regions currently on the disk. There were few large flares, but base GOES level is high, with many C flares. Since we are currently in active/vigorous decimation and the SSR is emptying each day, we are in a good position to handle data if there should be a large flare coming up. It is expected that activity will remain at its current level in the next few days. (STEREO-B does not show many new regions coming, but some of the current regions have just barely turned earthside.)

How many GOES flares occurred?

 Flares above B, C, M, X class were      8    43     4     0

And how many of these are listed in the RHESSI flare list?

 Flares above B, C, M, X class were      6    29     1     0

And how many had EXCELLENT coverage?

 Flares above B, C, M, X class were      5     16     0     0

There were RHESSI flares/GOES flares 300 / 55 over the time range 18-Jul-12 25-Jul-12

Memory Management

The SSR is emptying after each pass set.

Spacecraft Status

Last week the HV on detector 8 was lowered in order to reduce noise coming out of the SAA. After the HV change, detector 8 continued to show excessive count rates but not so high as they were previously. Since the livetime is not greatly affected by this and the memory situation is ok, no further action was taken for this detector. Detector 2 is also occasionally displaying high rates due to the ongoing light leak problem. Since the percentage of observing time that is affected is not great, and raising the threshold would impair low-energy flare spectroscopy, no action was taken on this problem either.

Data Gaps

There was a 10-minute gap of lost data in monitor rates around 2:30 on the 27th.

Detector issues

Due to an excess of low energy counts coming out of the SAA, the HV on detector 8 was lowered by 5 steps, from 193 to 188 at 206/20:25 UT. The data following this change has not yet been downlinked to check whether this has resolved the problem.

Other notes

Brian has prepared further long-term plots of the cold plate temperature rise issue. Discussion on this topic was postponed until a time when Stuart and Rob can call in (possibly next meeting?)

AGU deadlines are coming up! Abstract deadline is next Wednesday; membership renewal should be done by this Friday.
